Title 1 Reading and Mathematics

Title 1 Team: Mrs. Cathy Holstein (Reading), Mrs. Liz Dean (Reading), Mrs. Kathy McWhorter (Math), Mrs. Janet Ferrell  (Math and Reading)

The purpose of Title 1 is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments. Title 1 Teachers at Dunbar Primary work to accomplish this by provided extra reading and math support through regular intervention services for students who are struggling.

DIBELS Benchmark assessments are completed three times during the school year to measure skills such as alphabet recognition, fluency, comprehension, and decoding (sounding words out). The results of these assessments are used to form small groups that will come to Title 1 for extra instruction.

All students completed the Beginning of the Year Everyday Math Assessment, which evaluated math skills to show math readiness for their assigned grade level. Second grade students also completed the initial The Scholastic Math Inventory (SMI). SMI is completed three to four times each year to measure students' understanding of Common Core math standards and the Standards of Mathematical Practice. The results of these assessments are used to form small groups that will come to Title 1 for extra instruction.

You will receive a letter from us if your student is receiving any Title 1 support for reading or math. With each letter, we included a few resources that will help you to incorporate reading and math into your daily routine.

Please remember to have fun with math and reading at home! Together we can make a difference!!
